There are two different vaccines in Human Trials now for Herpes. In laboratory tests, these were 100% successes. The major obstacles appear to be developing a distribution method, legal hurdles, and FDA approval.
As you know, Congress unanimously blocked the Male birth control pill, making it a controlled substance, with life in prison for distribution in quantity. This is how the USA reacts to cures for health problems.
I expect that I'll have to move to canada to get my birth control and herpes treatment.
On another note, AIDS cure efforts have had breakthroughs, and are in human trials too. Though I am still hesitant about the corporate nature of ownership of human DNA, and patents upon human subjects, especially the concept of a corporation owning or controlling any of my DNA, it is clear that the multinational genetic research is paying big dividends.
Both AIDS, HPV, HSV, and Ebola cures are now being developed in several nations. I hope that eventually, nobody will have to deal with lifelong viruses, and that they'll become ancient history.
Wired.com and Digg.com have posted many stories about medical journals that are publishing these results. Unsurprisingly, these astonishing breakthroughs are NOT being picked up in the corporate media. I expect any AIDS or HSV vaccine to be blocked by US congress for the same reasons as birth control: Morality.
I think it will be the final signpost, as a US Navy veteran, if such treatment is blocked. I will abandon my citizenship, that I fought so fiercely for, and take up permanent residence, even citizenship, in a nation that has open and free medical care.
The first HSV trials are to be published in the first quarter of 2009. google it or check out wired, ars technica, or technorati for blogs and links.
